We are on a mission to give children and young people from disadvantaged communities the literacy skills to succeed in life. You could join us to lead our work in Blackpool.

We are recruiting an experienced project manager to lead delivery and build relationships with a wide range of partners, ensuring activity is embedded within broader local priorities.

What you’ll be doing

You will lead the delivery of Get Blackpool Reading, our Hub in Blackpool. A Hub is a ten-year, place-based response to the challenges of intergenerational low literacy, working with a range of partners to shape and deliver activity as part of a local strategy. Each Hub has a different approach to tackle low literacy based on the assets and needs in the area.

You will be responsible for developing strategic planning around literacy and embedding it within broader local priorities in Blackpool. You will work closely with our Hubs team across the North West and in London, as well as reporting to a local Senior Steering Group including senior figures in Blackpool. The initial focus will be on working with young people through secondary schools as well as youth and community settings. Key activities will include improving and joining up existing literacy provision, co-ordinating local leads for each key outcome and engaging with a range of partners, including schools, business and priority communities.

What we’re looking for

You will be an excellent project manager with extensive experience including financial and risk management within the charity or public sector. You will also have experience of working in or with the education sector, in community or youth engagement, and with business partners.

You will need strong relationship management and team leadership skills, as well as knowledge of the Blackpool community and its challenges.

One person in six has poor literacy skills that impact every area of their life. A child without good literacy skills will struggle to succeed at school, and as an adult, they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood that, by the age of five, a child’s literacy skills will be below average.

The National Literacy Trust is dedicated to improving the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of those who need it most, giving them the best possible chance of success in school, work and life. We run Literacy Hubs and campaigns in communities where low levels of literacy and social mobility are seriously impacting people’s lives.
