One of the most exciting placemaking projects in Europe, Barking Riverside will transform a former industrial site along the River Thames into a new London district that everyone can be proud of. Set on a 179ha site, alongside 2km of south facing Thames river frontage, the area is growing to become a vibrant neighbourhood of over 10,000 homes.
As the In-House Governance & Legal you’ll be in touch with everything that’s going on at BRL and have substantial influence as well. You will be responsible for ensuring statutory and legal compliance and developing and maintaining good governance procedures across Barking Riverside.
You will be responsible for supporting the business in all legal matters and have the opportunity to develop the legal strategy ensuring the correct support is available to the business and procuring a framework of legal firms to provide the right level of expertise for the right task whilst also ensuring best value.
We are seeking an experienced, innovative and enthusiastic Solicitor. The ideal candidate will be customer focused and proactive in proposing legal solutions that demonstrate commercial acumen and an ability to think strategically and to clearly and concisely explain concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and negotiator who is able to work collaboratively with others across the business and manage all aspects of relationships with Barking Riverside’s external counsel and stakeholders.
Ideally with sector knowledge you should be able to assist in identifying the most efficient and appropriate mix of internal resource and external legal assistance to ensure costs are sensibly controlled.
The successful candidate will be:
– Qualified as a Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales or equivalent qualifications
– Be comfortable presenting to and influencing business customers at all levels
– Able to manage external counsel and legal budgets
– Highly organised and able to meet tight deadlines.
– Able to put in place training practices and establish and promote the use of tools to manage legal risks counsel.

Barking Riverside London is a joint venture between the Mayor of London and L&Q to deliver a quality led new riverfront town in East London comprising of 10,800 homes, a new rail station, new schools and commercial and cultural offerings along 2km of south-facing Thames river frontage. Barking Riverside London will feature healthcare, schools, open space, public squares, new rail and river connections into central London, up to 65,000 sq.m. of commercial floor space including shopping, community and leisure facilities.
Most excitingly, there is an ambition to connect a new generation of Londoners to the River Thames and to design and deliver facilities, services and projects on the river frontage to create a new night-time economy in this part of the borough.

As Master Developer Barking Riverside is responsible for taking forward and coordinating all aspects of the design and development process as well as implementing the infrastructure works to transform the former power station site into a high quality development and help build a thriving, healthy community.
