Maternity Cover – 12 month Fixed Term Contract

£58,000 – 64,000pa

London, and currently remote

The Financial Controller is responsible for overall financial governance within the Comic Relief Group including responsibility for transactional financial systems, finance policies, investment and treasury management and the production of statutory financial information. The Financial Controller will be required to provide appropriate advice and support to Trustees, Directors and staff on technical accounting matters relating to the charity and its trading subsidiaries.

Key Accountabilities / Objectives:

• Establish and maintain a suitable financial control environment and processes for the organisation. Ensure these policies are in place and functioning effectively.
• Supervise the processing of all financial transactions, ensure the month end deadlines are met and that all bank and control account reconciliations have been completed and reconciling differences resolved.
• Ensure treatment of transactions are appropriate and compliant with the Charity SORP.
• Oversee annual external audit and statutory accounts preparation.
• Work with the Fundraising and Technical teams to ensure appropriate controls over the campaign income totals, public donations, corporate contributions, and tracking restricted and designated income
• Ensure Gift aid claims and VAT returns are timely and accurate and act as principle point of contact with HMRC.
• Maintain appropriate chart of accounts and support the development of finance systems and procedures across the organisation.
• Prepare papers as required for the Board and committees and attend meetings as requested.
• Oversee Comic Relief’s cash and investment portfolio, ensuring accurate recording of transactions and preparing a monthly 5-year cash flow forecast. Make recommendations to the Head of Finance on the placement of deposits to maximise returns.
• Manage both Charity Projects and subsidiary companies tax status in line with regulations and provide tax and accounting advice to the wider organisation as required. Advise on optimal tax structure
• Line manage staff within the financial control team.

Essential Education and Skills

• Qualified accountant with relevant post qualification experience.
• Extensive experience of using finance systems – Great Plains would be desirable.
• Knowledge of Charities SORP, statutory accounting regulations, VAT (including exempt, partial exemptions and reverse VAT), PAYE and other payroll taxes, and Gift Aid.
• Experience of running a finance function and managing staff.
• Proven experience of preparing charity annual accounts for external publication.
• Proven experience of setting standards, leading and developing a team.
• Understanding of voluntary sector, financial controls required and experience of working with senior managers and decision makers (including Trustees) preferred.
• Understanding of investment and cash markets.
