Freelance opportunity for a HVDC Cable Design Engineer to be based in London, Kolding or Hamburg. This will be a 12 month contract that has the potential to be extended.
Contribute to ensuring projects maintain high levels of health and safety performance Contribute to cable package and support Package Manager with technical know-how on HVDC cable system design and manufacturing (including cable accessories) Ensure compliance of the contractor’s proposed technical solution with the technical requirements set out by the Employer’s Requirements Undertake internal feasibility studies to identify preliminary cable sizing and cable loss calculations. Support projects delivery organisation with HVDC cable inputs for the Business Case. Prepare export cable availability calculations and update cable Fact-book as necessary. Support Transmission Road map in closely following the development of HVDC Cables in the industry and support process to ensure the technologies are on the right level of maturation and fit for purpose for the respective projects Finalise detailed design of the cable system (including accessories and cable protection system) in cooperation with the contractors Perform technical review of reports, design and system studies supplied by contractors and third parties (e.g. Cable and Accessories Design and Analysis Reports, cable optimisation, fault studies etc.) Support in compliance with the project budget; address changes to Package Manager. Monitoring of time schedule and progress of suppliers. Contribute to the identification and management of risks, opportunities and mitigation plans Coordination of cable product quality assurance and quality control throughout the HVDC cable supply chain
Skills and Background
B.Sc or M.Sc in Electrical engineering A minimum of 5 years’ experience with HVDC onshore and offshore cable design and manufacturing. Excellent understanding of technical specifications and International Standards (CIGRE, IEC, etc) for subsea cables, cable accessories, cable protection systems and the related components for a cable laying campaign Experience of cable thermal rating (knowledge of COMSOL modelling is a bonus), power loss, isotherms, induced voltages & currents, transient voltage and cable pulling tension calculations. Sound knowledge of the HVDC Cable supply chain and market conditions. Being able to attend & witness PQ, type tests and Factory Acceptance Testing at HVDC cable and fibre optic cable manufacturing facilities and provide a Factory Audit report. Preferably experience with cable installation and testing. Preferably good understanding of UK regulations, DCO & Planning requirements for wind farms. Experience with project management (preferably IPMA Level D/C ) Preferably experience with wind farm projects (onshore and offshore) Both practical and theoretical experience Good English language skills and preferable also good German and/or Danish language skills Willingness to travel and offshore visits
