MERCY MEDICAL CENTER
Under direct supervision, the Emergency Room Technician assists in carrying out the phases of the nursing process as appropriately delegated by the Registered Nurse. Performs activities and functions of patient care which are task oriented and within the skill level and scope of the Emergency Room Technician, in accordance with Mercy Medical Center Policy and Procedure Manual. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.
Utilizing the plan of care as developed by the Registered Nurse, assists the Registered Nurse in providing patient care from a holistic approach, specific to the age of the patient population identified within the department/unit scope of service, and in accordance with the department/unit standards.
Demonstrates ability to anticipate/identify physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the patient and appropriately reports to the Registered Nurse.
Communicates and collaborates effectively with Registered Nurses, multi-disciplinary team members, patients, families and significant others to facilitate the care of the patient including teaching needs and discharge planning.
Prioritizes and implements appropriate interventions and treatments as directed by the Registered Nurse, utilizing the formulated plan of care.
Documents and communicates patient’s response to interventions/treatments provided.
Identifies and communicates significant changes in patient’s status (potential or actual adverse patient occurrences) to the Registered Nurse.
Reports and records aspects of data collection/tasks performed into the patient record accurately, concisely and within established policy.
Ensures that documentation accurately reflects supplies, equipment, and services provided.
Performs aseptic and sterile treatments/procedures per Registered Nurse direction and physician order, and in compliance with Mercy Medical Center policy and procedure.
Maintains knowledge and demonstrates competency in use of patient equipment.
Maintains and annually updates the Emergency Room Technician Skills Performance Checklist per Mercy Medical Center established policy and unit standards.
Recognizes lawful/ethical limitations to his/her role in the nursing process.
Takes responsibility and maintains overall unit organization and safety, and reports discrepancies to appropriate person in a timely manner within limitations of authority.
Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
Communicates/collaborate/cooperates with other departments as necessary.
Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.
Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in services.
Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Mercy and Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Mercy and Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and Mercy business.
Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)

Current EMT maintaining a current Iowa license, or must have successfully completed a 75 hour credit (or more) Nursing Assistant Program (Certified Nurse Assistant) from an accredited school. A minimum of 1-2 years prior patient care experience preferred. Basic Life Support Certification (BCLS) required. Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. This job is categorized as “Medium Work”. Has the physical stamina to meet the requirements of this job. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and /or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Must be able to handle stress effectively. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious disease, chemical and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient, and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
