Testing: Phlebotomy is a heavily invasive procedure requiring the phlebotomist to perform a complex sequence of maneuvers both properly and safely. These diverse procedures include venipuncture, fingersticks, heelsticks, assisting physicians with bone marrow collection, performing template bleeding times and limited bedside laboratory testing including bedside glucose and I-STAT testing. Results of these laboratory tests are recorded and reported in a timely manner while maintaining quality control standards.
Makes rounds or trips to various on and off campus sites to gather non-laboratory collected specimens and statuses these specimens received in LIS system. Completes specimen processing and aliquoting and delivery of appropriate specimens to proper laboratory section for testing.
Inventory: Assists in maintaining department inventory.
Education: Participates in continuing education programs and trains new phlebotomists.
Caring : Fulfills the responsibilities of this position in a caring manner and interacts with the patients population of neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
To fulfill the requirements of this position, a valid Mississippi driver’s license is preferred and meet the established hospital policy for approved drivers of hospital vehicles. It is highly desirable that the person have a high school diploma or equivalent and have successfully completed a college-based phlebotomy training program or an on-the-job training program. Certification by a recognized certification agency is encouraged.
Employees must be able to demonstrate unique knowledge and skills necessary to care for neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
