Job Introduction
Surrey faces huge challenges to accommodate economic growth in a sustainable way in the context of a densely populated and valuable natural environment. We are a diverse County with an urban fringe in the north abutting Greater London, situated between Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
73% of the County is within the Metropolitan Greenbelt, 26% within one of the two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 22% covered in Woodland. Development proposals in Surrey are often controversial and can generate significant public interest. Surrey has a diverse range of mineral resources which make an essential contribution to the county’s economic growth and quality of life, the development of infrastructure such as schools and roads, and also used for industrial and energy purposes.
Over the last half century or so non-hazardous waste has been disposed of through landfill using the void spaces left by many of Surrey’s mineral sites. Most of these landfill sites have now been filled and restored and the emphasis is now on waste minimisation, recycling, treatment and energy recovery; making use of new technology to manage waste in the most sustainable way.
The County Council is the Planning Authority for minerals, waste and the County Council’s own development proposals. We are looking for experienced planning professionals to fill the above posts, who want to expand their experience and continue to develop their career in Planning.
Excellent communication skills are crucial for these posts as you will be expected to politely and confidently communicate verbally and in writing with the public, fellow professionals, applicants and County Councillors. Good organisation, self-motivation, enthusiasm and attention to detail are important personal skills in these roles.
To be shortlisted for interview, your application will need to clearly show evidence of:
In return for your skills and commitment, we promise to provide an even better place to work – with a supportive and friendly environment and flexible ways of working that make a positive difference to you. We also offer a rewarding, stimulating and challenging career path that follows the principles of openness and fairness every step of the way.
