At the general direction of the Clinic Director/Manager, the RN is responsible, in partnership with the Clinic Director/Manager, for the overall coordination and management of the Spine physician’s practice. This includes patient assessment and education, triaging phone calls and using critical thinking skills to find solutions related to patient care, scheduling of tests and procedures, appropriate documentation, and serving as the communication link between the patient, the physician and other clinic departments or agencies involved in the patient’s care. The Spine RN will also be responsible for completing the pre-op optimizer, pre-op patient education, and pre and post op phone communication with the patient to follow their care. Complies with MN state law and the Nurse Practice Act.
Education and Experience:
One year of clinical nursing experience; spine experience preferred. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
Minnesota RN license. American Heart Association BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
Special Skills and Aptitudes:
Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
Effective observation, reporting, documentation and communications skills.
Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques gained through a variety of nursing experience.
Exemplifies self-direction with good organizational, analytical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge and compliance of state and federal accrediting agencies.
Working knowledge of CRMC pre-op optimizer tool and program.
1. Direct Patient Care
Gather health history and chief complaint from new patients prior to surgeon seeing them.
Assess all other clinic patients, anticipating appropriate preparation of the patient for physician visit.
Assist LPN/CMA with rooming patients and obtaining vitals as needed.
Perform or assist with dressing application and removals and/or suture removals as ordered.
Provide patient education and instructions along the care continuum, including preoperatively, postoperatively, medications, and care plan.
Complete pre-op optimizer and pre-op education for patients who will be having surgery.
Complete pre and post op telephone communication to surgical patients and document patient status/progress.
2. Indirect Patient Care
Document vitals, treatments, procedures, interventions, medications, and essential notes in the patient’s medical record according to clinic policy.
Assist physician and reception/scheduling staff in maintaining an accurate daily schedule providing efficient patient flow.
Schedule lab tests, x-rays, consults, surgeries, hospital admission or other appointments as ordered by physician, seeing that all necessary authorizations are complete.
Call, fax, or electronically send prescription refills as ordered by physician or standing order and document according to policy.
Facilitate communication between physician and patient.
Manage voicemail and patient inbox messaging, triaging problems, answering all questions as able in a timely fashion and consulting physician as needed.
Manage incoming referrals and triage for appropriateness/urgency of appointment needed.
Problem solve and secure alternate solutions as necessary.
Utilize excellent customer service skills in order to positively impact the experience of care our patients, their families and other service partners.
Attend nursing department meetings.
Demonstrate Standards of Excellence when other duties are assigned.
